Medical peel
Application of medical exfoliating solutions to improve the texture, radiance and evenness of the skin.
A medical peel consists in applying to the skin an exfoliating solution which aims to encourage the renewal of the superficial layers of the skin, bearing in mind that the skin’s response varies from one situation to another. Exfoliating agents come in several families and at different levels of depth; the choice of the formulation, of its concentration and of the application time is a medical decision, one that I make after a careful examination of the skin. Some protocols are formulated to limit visible flaking, but their relevance is assessed case by case, with respect for each person’s anatomy and sensitivity.
The session begins with cleansing of the area to be treated, before the solution is applied gradually, under medical supervision, then neutralised or rinsed off according to the protocol chosen. Sensations of tingling, warmth or tightness may be felt during the application. The duration of the session, the number of sessions that may be required and their spacing depend on the indication and on the skin’s response; these elements are specified in consultation, without anticipating anything that the examination would not justify.
This technique is intended mainly for situations of irregular texture, or of a dull or uneven complexion. The face remains the area most often concerned, others being open to consideration depending on the assessment. A peel is not suitable for every skin, nor for every time of year: the phototype, a history of pigmentary disorders, a current skin lesion or infection, certain treatments and recent or planned sun exposure may lead to the procedure being postponed, or indeed not offered when it is not indicated.
After-effects may occur, notably redness, a sensation of tightness and flaking; other reactions remain possible, in particular changes in pigmentation, whose course cannot be prejudged, and which are detailed during the prior consultation. My aim is to set every procedure within rigorous photoprotection and local care, explained before the session and intended to be followed consistently. A prior consultation is compulsory: it allows the skin to be examined, the alternatives, the limits and the risks to be set out, and the conclusion to be reached, where applicable, that the procedure is not indicated.
