LED light therapy
Exposure to LED light, most often as a complement to other skin treatments, depending on the indication.
LED light therapy is based on the emission of non-ionising light, produced by light-emitting diodes. Several wavelengths coexist, each associated with distinct indications, and their choice is a matter for my medical assessment. It is a non-invasive technique, involving neither injection, nor incision, nor any breach of the skin; I most often propose it alongside other treatments, rather than in place of them.
The session takes place at the practice. The skin is first cleansed and make-up removed, eye protection is put in place, then the light source is positioned facing the area concerned; each patient remains settled and still throughout the exposure. The arrangements for the exposure, the length of the session, the pacing and the number of sessions, if any, depend on the indication retained and are specified in consultation. Preparation instructions, where any exist, are given in advance.
The face is the area most frequently concerned, but other areas may be envisaged depending on the situation. This technique generally takes its place as a complement to another skin treatment, as support in the period following a procedure, or in the management of acne-prone skin. It may contribute to these forms of management, though the result cannot be announced in advance, since the response varies from person to person and from situation to situation. In certain cases, the procedure is not indicated.
After-effects may occur: a sensation of warmth, transient redness or ocular discomfort have been described. Photosensitivity, whether linked to a condition or to a treatment under way, constitutes a contraindication to be assessed, and it is important that each patient reports all of their treatments. The prior consultation is compulsory: it allows me to examine the skin, to look for a contraindication, to inform about the possible alternatives and to determine whether this technique is suited to each person’s situation.
